Evoultion Of Kids TV: Barney's Horrifying Childhood All Documented In Peacock's I Love You, You Hate Me

For anyone who was a kid in the '90s, the lyrics "I love you, you love me/We're a happy family" probably hold a special place in your heart.

The mantra made famous by an in-costume Barney the Dinosaur on the super-popular children's series Barney & Friends preached love, acceptance and positivity. While the set was a joy-filled space for all who worked on the show, not everyone outside the TV studio was a fan of the eternally optimistic purple dino.

Peacock's new documentary series I Love You, You Hate Me dives deep into the sub culture of Barney haters who formed a community that revolted against his message of kindness.

Originally created by Texas mother Sheryl Leach as a companion for her only child, Patrick Leach, Barney eventually took off in popularity, with the PBS series becoming the network's most-watched kids' show in the '90s. And while there were many who loved the character, the show also had its share of detractors, including critics who literally bashed versions of the dinosaur and parents, fed up with that earworm of a song, who formed a not-so-secret society.

Celebs Who Appeared on Barney & Friends

From "Barney bashing" to actual death threats sent to some cast and crew, Barney became a target for hate. The success of the brand even took a toll on the Leach family and Patrick would eventually have a shocking run-in with the law no one saw coming.

Read on for the biggest bombshells and shocking revelations about the Barney backlash in I Love You, You Hate Me, now streaming on Peacock.

1. Barney Bashing Becomes a Trend

During the early '90s, critics who bonded over their hatred for the eternally optimistic children's dinosaur started a trend called "Barney bashing" in which they'd destroy dolls and toys of the character's likeness, take their rage out on Barney piñatas and even call for Barney's death.

As Travis Fox, a former University of Nebraska student, stated in the documentary, "I was the originator of a Barney bashing event at U of N at Lincoln in 1993...I think the reason we specifically went after Barney was it was the replacement to our Sesame Street. He was encroaching on our childhood. So we decided that we would kind of push back."

According to Lori Wendt, the Leach family's former babysitter, "Sheryl had a hard time understanding why someone could be so hateful and so angry over something that was made with such good intentions, with such pure heart."

2. Gay Rumors Emerge

After conservative activist Rev. Jerry Falwell accused Teletubbies character Tinky Winky of pushing a gay agenda on children in 1999, some started wondering about Barney the big purple dinosaur's sexual orientation.

The topic became material for comedians and Jon Stewart even joked once on The Daily Show, "Barney the singing dinosaur, who also happens to be purple and allegedly likes to hang out with his pals Tyrannosaurus Rex, Tyrannosaurus Lance and Tyrannosaurus Bruce."

3. The "I Hate Barney Secret Society" Is Created

Interviewee Rob Curran claimed in the doc that his daughter became "transfixed" by Barney as a toddler, much to his annoyance. "Barney only appeals to a 3-year-old mentality," he stated. "Barney just drove all the parents crazy. I realized I had to do something." So, he created "The I Hate Barney Secret Society," a newsletter and community for anti-Barney parents like him. "We are a support group for parents who have a Barney addict in the family," he explained. "I just gave a voice to all the fears of all the parents."

In just a few weeks, the newsletter got 7,000 sign-ups.

4. Barney Haters Form a Jihad

Like Curran, Sean Breen found community as the former leader of "The Jihad to Destroy Barney," an online group in which Barney haters created fan fiction with the goal of defeating fictionalized Barney villains. "Our criticism of Barney was it was all about conformity and consensus," Breen explained, "and that's a very ‘90s attitude."

5. Barney Bashing Gets Physical

In 1993 haters took Barney bashing to the next level. Citing a news report, the documentary explained how, "In a Galveston, Texas K-Mart, three boys aged 10, 11 and 12 attacked a man dressed up as Barney. They punched Barney and tried to tear off the dinosaur's head."

David Letterman even poked fun at the backlash during a Late Show episode, adding "Beat the crap out of Barney in a Texas shopping mall" to his segment "Top 10 Things That Will Get You on the Evening News."

6. Death Threats Begin

Former Barney & Friends music director Bob Singleton recounted his first experience with the Barney backlash, "The first time I really heard about Barney bashing was when I was nominated for a Grammy." While doing a radio interview about the achievement, he recalled, "There were people saying, 'His music drives me crazy. I'd just love to get my fingers around that guy's neck.' I was surprised that they felt like they wanted to do me physical harm. And it wasn't just one or two phone calls."

Singleton later unlisted his phone number. "I was in fear," he said. "I got actual death and dismemberment of my family emails. I really don't want to revisit it, that was a terrible time. It hurt so bad."

7. More Cast Members Get Threatened

Bob West, the original voice of Barney from 1988-2000, said he received similar threats. "I started getting emails, from middle school kids especially," he shared. "And some of them were very nice and some of them were absolutely hateful. They were very explicit and very violent. There was one email that asked, 'Are you the Barney that I stabbed and shot outside of New Orleans?' Then they went on to say they were going to come and find me and they were going to kill me."

8. Chicken Controversy & Lawsuits

Ted Giannoulis, the man behind famous San Diego sports mascot The Chicken, began incorporating Barney bashing into his game day comedy acts. "I decided to do a dance-off contest with Barney the Dinosaur," he recalled in the doc. "Suddenly he breaks into this great break dancing that puts me to shame." A "ticked off" Giannoulis would then tackle Barney on the field and rough the dinosaur up as fans cheered him on in the stands.

Sheryl Leach's company sued Giannoulis in 1998 for copyright infringement and asked for payment for using Barney's likeness. Unfortunately for team Barney, the law was on Giannoulis' side as he recounted from the court's dismissal of the case that his use of the character "clearly qualifies as a parody," a form of protected speech.

9. The Beginning of the End

In 1998, Sheryl decided to step away from her role at Barney & Friends. As Sloan Coleman, former SVP of Live Events, said, "Once Sheryl departed, it really was never the same again."

Then in the early 2000s, two more pivotal crew members left. Bob West walked away after more than a decade of voicing Barney ("I was bored," he explained) and David Joyner, the man inside the costume from 1991 to 2001, left to pursue other acting opportunities.

Soon after, Barney was sold to a giant media conglomerate for $275 million, and was later cancelled in 2010.

10. Kid Actors' Troubled Teens

Several child actors who appeared on Barney & Friends shared how they faced hardships after their time on the show. Pia Hamilton, who played Min from 1992 to 1996, and Hope Cervantes, who portrayed Tosha from 1992 to 1996, recalled being bullied in school and getting called names like "Barney lover" and "Barney girl." Cervantes added, "I did turn to drugs and alcohol to cope, to deal."

Ricky Carter, who played Derek from 1990 to 1995, admitted he began hanging around the wrong crowds and doing drugs after Barney. In 2004, he said he found himself in a potentially fatal situation when a supposed friend pulled a gun on him and asked for everything he had. "I jumped out the car and that's when he shot me in the spine," Carter explained. He said he was initially told he would be paralyzed for life, but after extensive therapy he was able to walk again.

11. Patrick Leach's Troubled Childhood

In a 2001 Katie Couric interview, Sheryl admitted her only child, son Patrick Leach, was bullied over his connection to the famed dinosaur.

Patrick would later have a violent run-in with a neighbor that landed him in prison, and the commutation application to shorten his prison sentence shed light into his troubled childhood. "Mr. Leach faced significant challenges as a child and entering early adulthood," Charles Mittelstadt, a Criminal Defense Investigator, quoted the commutation application document. "When he was young, his mother was busy building a successful career and his father struggled with depression. Mr. Leach's parents separated when he was 14 years old and divorced three years later. During that time Mr. Leach developed a brain tumor—benign—that was surgically removed."

12. Jim Leach's Tragic End

When Patrick was just 18, his father Jim Leach died by suicide several years after his and Sheryl's divorce.

13. Patrick Leach Shooting

By 2013, Patrick was 27 and living in Malibu. That January, Patrick shot his neighbor Erick Shanks on Shanks' property after accusing him of trespassing on his. (Shanks survived.) Patrick fled but was soon arrested with multiple firearms in his possession, according to L.A. deputy district attorney Brenda Lee.

Patrick plead no contest to assault with a deadly weapon and in 2015 was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but ultimately only served five years after a commutation.

Criminal Defense Investigator Charles Mittelstadt shared his own insight into Patrick's mental state at the time, "By him own admission he became essentially almost addicted to marijuana to where it was coping mechanism as a way to numb his emotions...It sort of amped up his anxiety and amped up his paranoia."

Ultraview Vs. A Regular DStv Platform: A Better Understanding On How To Consume Your Money

For several weeks, eMedia Investments has been briefing audiences about their new pay-tv tier to the Openview platform, Ultraview. A multiverse platform where consumers are given the option of two packages Pride and Spice but both come at a hefty price with some comparing it to the likes of DStv.

Before we give our opinion on the matter let's first look at the basics.

DStv is a pay-tv outlet operated by MultiChoice where consumers get access to over 120 channels ranging from movies, sports, drama series, reality shows, kiddies, music, doccies and movies. It currently ranks as Africa's top player in the pay-tv business.

Ultraview is more of a diverse or cultural outlet by eMedia Investments as of this moment it only has Bollywood and LGBTQ based channels but that doesn't mean you can't find a variety of content if anything only a portion of DStv's lineup can be viewed on these channels.

MultiChoice has been in the market for decades with the DStv bouquet and have been criticized by several consumers for the load of repeats funneled onto their platform, the number of channels that have already been removed and the excessive costs in programming.

DStv:

Boomerang might be first channel to exit the DStv platform in 2023

MultiChoice shares crytpic message about eMedia's 4 channels

MultiChoice and eMedia Investments gets roasted over load shedding plans

BBC to close linear channels and move to an internet only digital future

During the week, eMedia Investments had gotten a taste of the MultiChoice criticism ahead of Ultraview's rollout and this mainly has to do with the quantity and pricing of the packages as well as the offering in general part of which is deemed offensive to Christians.

For several years, DStv consumers wondered when MultiChoice was planning on unbundling their channels and Ultraview gave a clear reflection when charging consumers either R75p/m or R120p/m for just two channels.

Same goes with the likes of Disney+, Paramount+, Peacock, BritBox and HBO Max where you need about R700p/m or R800p/m to view the best of HBO, Adult Swim, NBC, BBC, ABC and Showtime altogether versus R450p/m with your Compact bouquet.

It goes show the best entertainment doesn't always come in cheap as seen with Ultraview's current offering. In general, it's not about who has more on the table but how productive you make a business.

eMedia Investments:

SABC+ Vs. eVOD: The Consequence Of Free-To-View Television

MultiChoice and eMedia Investments plan to combat load shedding get a lot of attention

Ultraview Pride and Ultraview Indian coming soon to Openview

Could SABC be unveiling another two channels for Openview Ultra?

To those viewing MultiChoice as a better contender take to account, only a fraction of the actual total of channels are watched by DStv consumers. Sure, it may be cheaper but most of the content in question will likely to date back to 90s/00s if not approachable.

As for Ultraview prior to when it was only Openview, eMedia Investments often sought out brands which gained traction which could be the case for this package the downside has to do with the quantity as that's distracting consumers from Ultraview's potential.

I mean I get it these are M-Net type channels but the moment another brand tags along with the something similar if not the same expect consumers to follow that brand if it means paying less to view that alternative or waiting longer to access a particular show.

In the end, I feel that Ultraview doesn't cater enough to eMedia's current audience as a lot of viewers aren't familiar with this concept they're putting forward as opposed to DStv which has a number of options like AddMovies, DStv Internet, Decoder Insurance etc.

Escaping Gibby: A Look Into The Life Of Noah Munck From The Comfort Of His Sadworld

When he appeared on set you knew something funny or strange or downright uncomfortable was about to happen.

Gibby was a chubby, outlandish yet lover character casted on Nickelodeon's most popular live-action series in history, iCarly. Noah Munck is the actor behind the Gibby character. He was originally suppose to be on 1 or 2 episodes but he provided so much comedic value that the producers kept him on as a regular.

Overtime, Gibby got tired of the corny, childish humour and constantly being the butt of the joke brought a lot of ramifications in his real life including people shutting his name out loud to take his shirt off and dance. You'll probably be surprised to find out what Noah's career looks like today which consists of cryptic and esoteric videos alongside an underground music career.

Today, we're gonna look at how Noah's life was impacted by iCarly and how he managed to escape his identity as Gibby.

Noah Munck was a typical Orange County teenager who played football and went to public school. He knew he was interested in arts so he got into acting classes which led to him doing plays and performances. His acting classes would have talent agent auditions where agents would come and look for the next big star.

At 10 years old, he got an agent who got him his first audition which was for the show iCarly. The audition was just for an episode or 2 but the production team realised how valuable he'd be as a goofy side character so he became a regular for 57 episodes.

iCarly was about a young girl who ran a internet blog with millions of viewers. Her best friend Sam is her co host, her friend Freddy is their filmer/tech support and it is all filmed in the upstairs of her brother's apartment.

Regular Nick:

New Bear Grylls series is coming soon to Da Vinci Kids

Gibby is just a kid that goes to school with them, he's an easy target for jokes and he is someone they can pick on. By the end of season 1, he became more of a friend to them a wacky friend but he has a lot of endearing qualities to him. He's sweet, very friendly, pretty stupid but he isn't someone you want to bully.

He was totally unrelatable consistently doing ridiculous things that you're totally excited for the unpredictability that he would bring next. He was mostly famous for saying his character name as a catchphrase and taking his shirt off frequently that it became a normal thing.

At the time, Noah didn't this as iCarly was his first acting job ever so he was basically willing to do anything. However, Noah was aware of what people were saying about him online. iCarly was a TV show about a web show that actually had a website with blog posts and trivia. Viewers could also leave comments on the website.

Noah said at the age of 10/1 he was reading rude comments about his appearance which made him feel bad. His parents discovered a website for people with fat boy fetishes that he was posted all over. Needless to say, Noah had mixed emotions about the whole taking his shirt off thing.

His parents never forced him to continue acting because it was his passion. They were always around and kept a close eye on him. Noah speaks nothing but the highest of praise for his parents.

In a tweet, it was revealed that Noah and his iCarly co-star Nathan had a love for dubstep. Noah said when he was around 13, one of the iCarly crew members Daniel Gonzalez gave him MF Doom and Dayla Soul mixtapes which drove his love for music and led him to become a music producer/DJ.

The last iCarly episode was filmed later in 2011 and by season 4 and 5, Gibby was the main character, his success and evolution was popular in iCarly that series creator Dan Schneider felt his character deserved his own spinoff TV show of the same name which remains a mystery.

There was a pilot episode filmed and edited according to Dan but never aired or leaked onto the internet. All that was available was the title card and logo for the show alongside the script for the very first episode, photos of the cast and set it was filmed. No one knows what happened, all that we know is Gibby never got his own show and 2012 marked the official end of iCarly.

5 seasons of what people consider to be the best live-action show of all time, Noah stayed busy trying to get roles in other projects. Later in 2012, he got a lead role in Nicky Deuce which is meant to the reboot of The Sopranos which has some of the original cast members.

The film didn't go to theatres and it isn't highly praised or anything but acting alongside those legends was an absolute accomplishment. After this film, Noah was sick of children's TV and the corny humour that he knew it was time to leave that behind.

In 2013, he went back to high school for his senior year, he doesn't consider himself a social outcast but had a difficult time mixing with kids who knew each other their whole lives. He would spend most of his free time on Ableton learning how to make music.

Insidus Games:

He produced dubstep under the name nobsik then moved on to EDM trap and even experimented with rapping a little bit. It didn't take him long to want to get back into acting luckily he landed a role as Naked Rob in the 1980s based sitcom, The Goldbergs.

Noah acts as a side character that is a best friend to one of the main characters, he's starred in several episodes across 9 seasons and somehow managed to bag shows that managed to last him an average amount of seasons.

However it seemed as if Noah had the ghost of Gibby lurking around him. His new passions were not met up with the utmost praise from fans, he was 18 at the time and a few years removed from Nickelodeon.

Whenever he would post about his new projects or anything he was interested in, he'd be flooded with troll and hate comments, accompanied by people who would make him feel insecure about his appearance. He abandoned the Noah Munck Twitter and Instagram because of trolls and people calling him Gibby.

Gibby was kind of a punching bag in the show so he feels that the fans do it back to him. Not figuring out how to seperate Gibby the character and Noah Munck in real life. Noah doesn't take it too personally but it gets tiring when you want to move on your life and talk about your interests and everyone wants you to remain that thing as you were at the age of 13.

He did also deal with people demanding him to take his shirt off literally yelling across a restaurant while he is eating with his family. One time, a random girl just jumped on his back while he was walking across the street. He started to resent the Gibby character a little bit.

Noah is truly a sweet and wholesome guy, he didn't want to resent his past, it led to an angsty face for him. He really leaned to his passion of SoundCloud rap and producing. He started an obscure YouTube channel called Sadworld Online

Then 20 year old started posting his material which included poorly scripted shitpost comedy that quickly developed a cold fanbase. All the music in the YouTube series was produced by him which helped fans get interested in his music. The raunchy side of humour is something we all needed, the TVMA rated Gibby that no one could make fun of Noah anymore because he embraced his appearance and leaned to it for comedy.

He genuinely built a fanbase of his new art, at one point it bothered him that his embarassing moments were on the internet forever now he looks back at the Gibby character fondly.

Sadly, Gibby did not make a return for the iCarly reboot in 2021 or make an appearance in season 2. A fan asked Jake Hogan, a writer on the iCarly reboot about Noah's absence and replied "we approached him".

This means that they had reached out to him but he denied it could have been a couple of things. He was probably busy working hard on another show and side projects. Another reason similar to how anyone would feel about reboots he wants to leave Gibby in the past.

Only in the past few years did he come to terms with the Gibby character before that he did mixed emotions. He knew that if he had to return for the reboot he had to relive the struggles of Gibby where people will flood social media about his appearance, his acting career would hit the mercy of one character. A lot of actors want to outlive their roles plus we all know that they'd want him to take his shirt off at least once which as a grown man some people may not be interested in.

Noah managed to remove the box of Gibby and now he can look at it as a positive experience all from the comfort of his Sadworld.

Recap: Forbidden Passion Season 2 Was Scrapped Due To Monica Spear's Passing

Forbidden Passion is a 2012 drama series produced by Telemundo Studios that followed the long road love story of Bianca and Bruno. I don't want to spoil it or give too much basically the female lead got involved with her lover's uncle.

Based on the 2008 Turkish drama Aşk-ı Memnu which derives from the novel of the same name. It starred Monica Spear and Jencarlos Canela alongside Roberto Vander, Mercedes Molto, Rebecca Jones, Henry Zakka, Jorge Consejo and Carmen Aub.

From what a certain deleted article mentioned before passing, the series was renewed for a second season and some of the cast were to set to reprise their roles including Monica Spear and the part in bold shouldn't be read if you haven't watched the show.

Everyday Novelas:

Between You And Me now on Zee One

Eternal Love coming soon to Star Life

Fearless Heart coming soon to Telemundo

The second season would have seen the revival of Bianca after she committed suicide on her ex lover's wedding which never happened following her passing. Basically, the network loves to revive characters that were reported dead but who cares we got Lord Of The Skies S8.

Now the reason a second season ended up being scrapped with no chance of it in the coming future I mean I wouldn't be shocked if it was rebooted had to do with the unfortunate passing of Monica Spear with Forbidden Passion being her last project.

For those who weren't aware of the whole matter it goes as follows:

Monica Spear, 29, a soap opera actress, and Thomas Berry, 39, died after being attacked when their car broke down at night on a highway in central Venezuela in January.

Their daughter, Maya Berry Spear, suffered a leg injury but was in a stable condition after the attack that put a spotlight on the country's soaring murder rate.

The three men confessed to their involvement in the murder, the public prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Jean Carlos Colina, 19, got a 26-year sentence, while Jose Ferreira Herrera, 18, and Nelfrend Jimenez Alvarez, 21, were jailed for 24 years, the statement said.

Telemundo:

- Nurses returns for a season 3

- Prediction: what to expect on Telemundo in 2023?

- Lord Of The Skies renewed for season 8

What happened to little Maya?

14-year-old Maya Berry Spear, daughter of Monica Spear, was legally adopted by the brother of the remembered former beauty queen Ricardo Spear and his partner, actress Daniela Bueno, who signed the papers in August this year.

Let us remember that since Monica's tragic death, those who were in charge of little Maya were her maternal grandparents, Rafael Spear and Inge Mootz, but she always grew up surrounded by the love of all her family, especially her uncles.

"I witnessed how he was busy, at the time from his role as an uncle, to give her values and fill her with love." Ricardo has a generous heart and has always been very protective and loving with her. We knew it came with a huge responsibility, however, we took on it and today we are happy about the decisions we made. "Our family is built from will and this bond is forever," Daniela told People in Spanish.

How do you think Forbidden Passions season 2 would have turned out had it finished production?

Emmanuelle: A Look Into One Of The Wildest And Bizzare Shows From e.tv

Emmanuelle is a late night show that was beamed onto eMedia Investments' only TV channel at the time e.tv. For those who were familiar with the Emmanuelle, the series despite being a bit inappropriate for daytime audiences explored one's inner fantasies.

Before it was pulled from the channel, Emmanuelle managed to attract a million audiences which is huge considering the timeslot it was allocated being 10pm. I don't why I thought of doing this maybe because I was too a victim at some point which I honestly doubt.

Since Dark Side Of The Ring, I've been used to reading up on stuff and diving down into their early life which is the case for Emmanuelle but I'll try my best to not bore anyone and only include the important bits. I mean I did read through the whole thing and these parts made a lot more sense.

Character history

Emmanuelle appeared as the pen name of Marayat Rollet-Andriane, a French-Thai actress born in the 1930s in Bangkok . Her 1957 book The Joys of a Woman detailed the sexual exploits of Emmanuelle, the "bored housewife" of a French diplomat. Rollet-Andriane's book caused a sensation in France and was banned.

The producer of another Arsan/Rollet-Andriane film Laure, Ovidio Assonitis, claimed that all books published under the pen name Emmanuelle Arsan were written by her husband Louis-Jacques Rollet-Andriane, rather than by Marayat.

Films

The first Emmanuelle film was the 1974 French theatrical feature Emmanuelle starring Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel became a success with a viewing audience estimated at 300 million. It remains one of France's most successful films, and played in the Arc de Triomphe theatre for over eleven years.

Several sequels starring Kristel followed, beginning with Emmanuelle 2 known as Emmanuelle: The Joys of a Woman in its U.S. release, and also Emmanuelle l’antivierge in some European press materials, including the soundtrack LP and CD.

A number of unofficial productions in Italy, Japan and the United States cashed in on the Emmanuelle craze. Among the best known were Italian "Black Emanuelle" films starring Laura Gemser , who became the second most popular actress to play Emanuelle in the 1970s.

After the last official Emmanuelle theatrical feature film, Emmanuelle au 7ème ciel (the seventh film for which Kristel returns as the main character), ASP began to produce further films, all featuring the character of Emmanuelle, albeit played by a series of actresses. These included a science fiction series in the 1990s called Emmanuelle in Space starring American actress Krista Allen in one of her first roles.
