WBD Unveils European Launch Details For Max Streamer Including In France As International Boss Gerhard Zeiler Talks Up Synergies: “We Are On The Way To $5B And Who Knows Where We Will End Up?” – Mipcom Cannes

The Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) Max streamer will launch in 22 European countries in spring 2024 and France and Belgium later next year, the media outfit revealed today.

Opening Mipcom Cannes with a keynote, interntional boss Gerhard Zeiler and EMEA Head of Streaming Leah Hooper Rosa brought highly-anticipated news of the rollout of the new streamer in the continent, which is rebranding from HBO Max with a bigger offering.

The Nordics, the Netherlands, Iberia and CEE, which already have HBO Max, will gain access to the rebranded streamer in the spring.

There will then be a “second wave” of launches later next year including in France and Belgium, which currently don’t have HBO Max, although WBD has an output deal with Amazon locally in France.

The service launched earlier this year in the U.S. and other territories. It will launch later in the UK due to the pre-existing content deal between Sky and WBD.

“The content breadth is so huge and we are enabling customers to find this content,” added Hooper Rosa. “And then they are increasing their time watching this breadth of genre, so streaming provides another avenue that compliments our distribution.”

“We promised the market $3B synergies, now we are on the way to $5B and who knows where we will end up?,” Zeiler went on to say.

He talked up the success that WBD has had with its goal to “execute as efficiently as possible” its “defining mission and vision.”

Following the Warner Bros merger with Discovery, new boss David Zaslav said he was targeting $3B synergies, which has seen the merger of teams and thousands of layoffs, but that synergy figure has crept up and up, confirmed by Zeiler today to be approaching $5B by next year.

He reiterated a “culture eats strategy for breakfast” mantra and said “we are one company not six or seven diluted units.”

Zeiler has seen something off an exodus in his international team of late but this wasn’t addressed at Mipcom. He set a new team earlier this month following a spate of exits including the likes Priya Dogra, Pierre Branco and Hannes Heyelmann alongside Robert Blair, who had worked in Warner Bros sales for 25 years.

WBD May Favor Local Partnerships Over Worldwide Max Rollout, Says JB Perette: ‘We Have The IP To Be A Survivor’

Warner Bros Discovery’s JB Perrette warns that the global streaming market faces pain and consolidation over the next three to five years, but he says that the merged group has what it takes to be among the big five groups that pull through.

And, to win the war of attrition and consolidation, WBD may choose not to fight every battle.

Perrette, WBD’s CEO and president of global streaming and games, said that the company’s Max streaming product is to be rolled out in a largely pre-determined sequence, one that arrives in Latin America and Europe before arriving in parts of Asia. But, speaking on Wednesday at the APOS conference in Indonesia, Perrette said that in some markets Max may never happen, and that WBD may favor local partnerships instead.

“If we think we’re going to have success and profitability, if our market differentiation is viable enough to make a go of it and have a profitable business over a three-to-five year timeline [then we will launch Max.] If the answer is ‘no’ because the market has ARPUs that are just too low or it is way over-served by a ton of other players, who are spending on a ton of content and losing a ton of money, we may say this is not the right time,” said Perrette.

“If we think we can be successful based on the three metrics that we have [profitability, market share and scale] then, yes, great, we’ll go and figure out how best to tackle it. But if the answer is no, we don’t see a path, then we’ll find partnerships and other ways to go to market.”

Perrette dropped a heavy hint that India, already the battleground for a seething cluster of local and international streaming players, may be prime example of a market where Max would be a player too many.

Perrette’s tactical approach flows from a macro assessment that the streaming market has gone too far too fast and that WBD, in particular, needs to return to rationality and profitability.

“We went through a decade of great oversupply and great under-pricing and we are in a period of rationalization and embracing the aggregation [process] There’s structural aggregation and there’s rebundling,” said Perrette. “I think you’re working towards a world where, over the next five to 10 years, you’re going to end up with three to five feasible players, in addition local champions in individual markets.”

Despite the chastening outlook, Perrette declared himself “very optimistic” that WBD has the strategy and content to be among the players that make it through the current tightening phase. “We lost $2 billion last year. We are now profitable in the first half of this year,” he said.

“I have high confidence. The IP we that have – between HBO, the Warner studio, all the factual content from Discovery side, to the DC Universe, “Harry Potter” — that, at the end of the day, great stories and great IP is what wins the day. Our portfolio gives us an absolute entitlement to be in that last group.”

Local product partnerships may be on the horizon too. “One of the areas we’re very focused on is we have great IP, things like DC franchises, which historically has been very English-language dominant, but where we can open and bring characters from that universe and originate local IP with a partner in that market. We think it’s not just investment entirely ourselves, but there may be creative ways to partner with existing local players,” said Perrette.

Dragon Ball To Return With New Anime Series Dragon Ball: DAIMA To Commemorate 40th Anniversary

The first trailer for the upcoming Dragon Ball DAIMA anime premiere was shown at the franchise’s panel at the 2023 New York Comic Con on Thursday, October 12, 2023. Previously leaked with the subtitle Magic rather than DAIMA, the new anime series is set to premiere in Fall 2024 according to this latest and first teaser trailer.

One of the key differences between Dragon Ball DAIMA anime and the leaked Magic details seems to be exactly who is turned into a child via a wish with the Dragon Balls. Whereas the Magic leaks claimed that just Goku and Shin would be turned into children, it seems that the entire mainline cast of the series has suffered the same fate.

While information on the series is somewhat minimal at this time, Dragon Ball DAIMA seems to be a new canonical mainline anime set around the same time as when Super takes place. Fans also get a look at the apparent upcoming antagonists for the anime, who’ve seemingly been watching the Z Fighters and all their past struggles this entire time.

The Dragon Ball DAIMA teaser trailer first starts with a brief overview of the history of the series, stretching from its debut as a manga in 1984 and beyond. Scenes from the non-canonical GT are even included here, which is certainly an intriguing choice. In any case, this continues until the year 2023 appears on the screen, with nothing playing behind it.

The year then changes to 2024 as the teaser trailer truly begins. Fans are taken to a demonic-looking castle, where two unknown apparent antagonists are standing within. They are surrounded by events from the history of the series, which seem to only cover the events of the Z anime.

After some brief seemingly unimportant shots, Shenron is seen appearing and asking someone for their wish. This is followed by a scene that sees both Goku and Vegeta turned into children, a plight that is revealed to have affected Bulma, Chi Chi, and essentially everyone else in the main cast.

The group is seen heading to the lookout and other various locations in the series, before once again showing the demonic castle and antagonists within. The trailer ends with a beam struggle between Goku and Vegeta as adults, before showing a young Goku preparing to fight someone and revealing the series logo.

Given the Fall 2024 release window, the series’ premiere will most likely coincide with the 40th anniversary of the original series, set to take place in November 2024. However, this is wholly speculative, with no further information on the series beyond what’s described above.

iCarly Revival Cancelled After 3 Seasons On Paramount+

"iCarly will not be returning for a fourth season on Paramount+," a spokesperson for the streamer told sources in a statement. "The series had a great three-season run and delivered on what fans really wanted to see with Carly and Freddie finally getting together. We want to thank the entire cast, the writers, directors and producers along with the whole crew for their dedication, creativity, and talent."

The first iteration of iCarly aired on Nickelodeon from 2007-2012 and starred Miranda Cosgrove as an early internet influencer whose titular web show becomes very popular. Jennette McCurdy played her best friend Sam, and Nathan Kress played her friend/love interest Freddie, while Jerry Trainer portrayed Carly's older brother Spencer.

All of those principals (except for McCurdy, whose recent memoir I'm Glad My Mom Died explains her retirement from acting) returned for the Paramount+ reboot in 2021, which further explored the romance between Carly and Freddie.

Kress mourned the cancellation on Twitter, writing that the crew "had a lot of story left to tell." He said, "Maybe somehow, someday, we'll find out how to story ends."

"The best people I've ever worked with in the business," Laci Mosley, who joined the reboot cast as Carly's roommate Harper, wrote on Twitter. "Thank you for tuning in to the reboot. Everyone put their deeply kind talented souls into this."

The Untimely Passing Of Former Impact Wrestling And WWE Star Chris Candido

At one time, Chris Candido had the world in his hands. He was one of the best technical wrestlers in the world, married one of WWE's most popular divas in Sunny, and quickly shot up the ranks in both WWE and ECW. However, life doesn't always go as planned. His time in WWE ended sooner than he might have hoped. Addiction issues arose and his marriage ended up on the rocks.

It was after he beat his addiction issues and got his life back together that things tragically ended. Candido was back on a major national wrestling stage. His marriage was back intact. He even looked like he could be a top star again. However, just like that, he died at 33 after what should have been a routine surgery.

Chris Candido's Road To WWE Began With ECW And Jim Cornette

Chris Candido got his start in wrestling as a teenager in New Jersey. In 1986, he and a friend began working in the industry by setting up rings. He went on to train at Larry Sharpe's Monster Factory and then made his debut in the ring that same year. Candido was 14 when he worked his first match. By 1993, Candido made his way to the pre-Extreme ECW, where he worked in a stable known as The Suicide Blondes. This led to Jim Cornette taking notice of the wrestler.

Candido had fallen in love with Tammy Lynn Sytch in high school and the two joined Cornette's Smoky Mountain Wrestling together, where she worked as his manager. He won several titles while working for Cornette and then even won his only world title when he captured the NWA World Championship after Shane Douglas vacated the title when ECW broke away. He held the title for three months and then one year later, he and Tammy signed with WWE.

WWE changed his name to Skip and made Tammy into Sunny, and they took on a fitness guru tandem who often mocked other wrestlers for being out of shape. It was here that Sunny became one of the biggest stars in WWE and Candido found his biggest national success as part of the Bodydonnas with Tom Prichard (Zip). However, it was also here that his life began falling apart. Reports that Sunny cheated on him with multiple wrestlers strained their marriage. This was also when both wrestlers began experimenting more with drugs.

Chris Candido Had Stints In ECW And WCW After Leaving WWE

In an interview, Chris Candido's brother Jonny said that when they got to WWE, they started abusing drugs more. He was just in the eighth grade when this happened, but he said he remembered a lot of messed up stuff going on with his brother and Sunny. Many of his stories were horrific, and it was obvious things needed to change fast or Chris might end up dead. By 1996, Chris quit WWE and went to ECW, and eventually Sunny joined him there.

This was a fresh start for Candido. Sunny was only in ECW limited times, but Candido himself became part of Shane Douglas' Triple Threat faction with Bam Bam Bigelow. He had a long tag team title reign with Lance Storm before he finally left after three years. After this, Candido worked in WCW for a short time in 2000, but mostly disappeared from the world of professional wrestling outside of indie promotions.

The Tragic Death Of Chris Candido Came After An Injury In TNA Wrestling

According to Jonny, Chris Candido was doing more and more drugs to block out the idea that Sunny was cheating on him. "He desperately didn't want to believe it because she would come home to him every night, and he literally had this unconditional love for her," Jonny said. "He was so nice and so naïve; he would...believe anything she told him."

That isn't how his life would end though. Chris reportedly got his life back under control again. He even got another chance at wrestling on a big stage again when he signed with TNA Wrestling in 2005. He worked with some top stars, including AJ Styles, Dustin Rhodes, and Diamond Dallas Page. Candido was on his way up the ladder, but it all came crashing down when he broke his leg in a tag team match at Lockdown 2005. TNA kept him involved in storylines, even having him come out in a wheelchair to help The Naturals win the tag titles. However, that episode aired days after he died.

At 33, Chris Candido had titanium plates and screws inserted into his legs after the injury. While recovering, he ended up developing a blood clot in his leg. Though many people believe the blood clot killed him, his brother Jonny said the autopsy said that the cause of death was acute pneumonia, caused by a sleep aid he received against doctor's orders. His lungs reportedly filled with fluid, and he died while recovering from his surgery. TNA honored him with a tag team tournament in his name and in 2009, the Hardcore Hall of Fame inducted him into its membership.

The Meaning Behind Fur Elise - A Verse Heard In Post Malone's Song

Something Real By Post Malone

Nothing intrigues the public like the secrets of the great and famous. Whether it is in 2017 or 1810, the mystique of secret loves and unknown origins captivate us all.

When the mystery involves Ludwig van Beethoven, a musician who stands historically at the pinnacle of greatness and fame, it ups the ante considerably! The romance of it all makes one almost swoon (as they might have said in 1810).

Okay, what does Fúr Elise mean?

Most of you are probably very aware that it is a charming piece of classical music written for solo piano, and it’s thought that it was written by Beethoven for a lady. In German, it translates to “For Elise.” The actual name of the piece is Bagatelle No. 25 in A Minor. And without a doubt it is today probably the composer’s most famous piece, played frequently, often loved but frequently overplayed and butchered by novices. It is the most famous piano music Beethoven ever composed, probably because practically anyone can play it.

A YouTube rendition of Beethoven’s Fur Elise
No matter where you go you will find Fur Elise sheet music and Fur Elise piano strains in the cafes, the theaters, the movies and the ring tones of smart phones.

The First Mystery – Who Composed Fur Elise?

The mystery began when the original handwritten draft and autographed score was found in in a Munich private home in the possession of Fräulein Babeth Bredl by a 19th Century musicologist named Ludwig Nohl. This was forty years after Beethoven’s death! The autograph read: ‘For Elise on 27 April as a remembrance of L. v. Bthvn’ Nohl transcribed it, but the autograph then disappeared. Fräulein Babeth Bredl gave Nohl permission in 1867 to publish it in his book on new Beethoven letters. A footnote in the book claimed ‘this quite charming little piano piece comes from the estate of Therese von Droßdik née Malfatti, who had given it to Miss Bredl of Munich’.

Luca Chiantore, a contemporary (b. 1966) scholar and musicologist and an Italian pianist, doubts the authorship of the piece. He proposes that no such finished manuscript existed and that Nohl himself derived the piece from perhaps a Beethoven’s sketch, leaving a question, Who wrote Fur Elise?
Beethoven’s handwriting, being very difficult to decipher, does turn up on a draft of Fur Elise with penciled notes added in 1833. It is viewable online at the Beethoven-Haus digital archive. It’s ascertained to be Beethoven’s rough draft of the existing Bagatelle. In 1984, a musicologist named Barry Cooper, pointed out in an article that there was very little needed to complete this draft. It was all but written. This pushes against the Nohl story and Chiantore’s doubts. It’s a mystery.

The Second Mystery – For Elise – Was it Meant to be Therese?

Who is Elise? No-one remembered any Elise in Beethoven’s life.

What people remembered was that Beethoven was smitten by one of his students and had asked for the hand of the lady, named Therese Malfatti, and had been refused. Yes, this is the same Therese who gave the original music sketch to Fraulein Bredl.
One story goes that in 1810, (Beethoven would have been 40 years old) he was invited to the Malfatti home for a party. Beethoven composed a short piano piece – Bagatelle Wo0 59 – for Therese, perhaps intending to play it for the family and guests and propose marriage.

The punch at this party was strong and Beethoven overly imbibed, too drunk to play his piece or propose anything.

Therese asked him for an inscription, and he wrote “Fur Therese” in almost illegible writing across the bagatelle. This is the piece passed along to her friend in Germany, probably bequeathed at her death. She did not accept Beethoven’s proposal, but instead in 1816 married a Hungarian count, Johann Wilhelm von Drosdick. Therese died in 1851.

Was There Really an Elise at all?

Nohl explained in his Beethoven letters book that even though the piece was originally in the care of Therese Malfatti, it was not composed for her but, according to the inscription in Beethoven’s hand, was written ‘for Elise’. He then added that Baroness von Gleichenstein (the sister of Therese von Droßdik) could not remember who Elise was. Since there was no known person named Elise in Beethoven’s circle of friends, scholars were mystified.

It was noted that he first met the rather elderly poetess Elise von der Recke (1754-1833) in Teplitz in 1811, the date making her an unlikely candidate. 1810 is the year of the Fur Elise creation.

Another Mysterious Theory

Contemporary Berlin musicologist Klaus Martin Kopitz (b. 1955) believes he uncovered Elise’s true identity – while he wasn’t even looking for it.

“For years, I’ve been working on a publication called ‘Beethoven in the eyes of his contemporaries,’ which includes all the reports from people who knew Beethoven personally: journals, letters, poems, memoires,” said Kopitz. “Certain women are mentioned, and one of them was Elisabeth Roeckel.”
According to Kopitz, a singer named Joseph Roeckel, sang in Beethoven’s opera “Fidelio” and had a younger sister named Elisabeth Roeckel. Beethoven and Roeckel became friends. In their circle, Elisabeth was affectionately nicknamed “Elise” and was musically inclined, a pianist, and later a singer.

In a letter, Elise wrote about an evening with the composer, the famous guitarist Mauro Giuliani, and composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel, who would later become her husband. “She wrote that Beethoven, true to his frisky Rhenish disposition, wouldn’t stop teasing her and she didn’t know what to do,”

In the spring of 1810, she went to Bamberg to work in theater, with the hope of impressing none other than ETA Hoffman, who was the theater manager there at the time.

Kopitz believes Beethoven dedicated the Bagatelle piano piece “in the memory of” Elise because they were separated when she relocated to Bamberg. Since Elisabeth Roeckel was referred to in the dedication as “Elise” and not the more formal “Fraeulein Roeckel,” she must have known Beethoven well, theorizes Kopitz

Indeed, their relationship was documented, as Elise herself had written about it.

The fact that Elise married Johann Hummel apparently did not mean the end of her friendship with Beethoven. Several days before the composer’s death in March 1827, Elise visited him. For remembrance, she cut off a lock of his hair and accepted one of his quills as a token.

Why did Elisabeth Roeckel remain anonymous to musicologists over the years? And why has the music so often been attributed to Therese Malfatti, who Beethoven proposed to in 1810? 1810 is the year Elise left Beethoven behind. Perhaps he was trying to catch Therese on the rebound? Who knows?
If, however, the Bagatelle was composed for Elise and not Therese, it is how and why the original manuscript could have made it into Therese’s hands

Did Beethoven recycle it?

Kopitz admitted that his theory on this point is not particularly scientific:

The director of the Beethoven Archive at the Beethoven House in Bonn, Bernhard Appel, said he was skeptical of Kopitz’ hypothesis, though he emphasized that he could not make a conclusion until the report Kopitz was preparing was available for detailed review.

“Elise was a very common name in Vienna at the time,” said Appel, so the dedication could have referred to any number of women. He added that, to prove who Elise really was, one would have to clarify the path the manuscript took before it disappeared.
“Would the music change if we knew who it was dedicated to?” questioned Appel.
